I guess we could never really be
Always treading different paths
But I wished it were you and me

Looking back it was so easy to see
Both of us waving our red flags
I guess we could never really be

I was much too naive
To let it be for keeps
But I wished it were you and me

I thought you were my guarantee
From all those lonely nights
I guess we could never really be

I think we can both agree
We didn't fit our needs
But I wished it were you and me

How were we supposed to foresee
We couldn't make it on the streets
I guess we could never really be
But I wished it were you and me
